The new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and young people

  • The "FunCAP" project disseminates the benefits of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) among young people in Galicia and northern Portugal.
  • More than 400 students from 14 schools will participate in this new project starting in March.

The new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which comes into force in 2023, is fundamentally characterized by being more ecological and environmentally friendly, as well as by promoting generational change in the countryside through women and young people.

However, it is necessary to reach young people, whether from rural or urban areas, to explain the advantages of the new CAP so they can decide for themselves a way of life in rural areas. Thus, the "FunCAP" project was born, with the aim of promoting the new CAP among younger generations in the most educational and informative way possible.

The project is coordinated by the Juana de Vega Foundation , an organization that works daily with various companies and institutions in rural Galicia. To achieve this goal, they have designed a board game that provides young people with a fun way of learning not only about the features of the new CAP, but also about the most important aspects of the European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy .

Galicia – Northern Portugal Euroregion

The Galicia-Northern Portugal Euroregion currently represents a space of strong social, economic, and cultural interconnection, with a high rural population and significant potential for future development. This is why the "FunCAP" project is launching its first project in this area, thanks to funding from the EU's " Information Measures Programme under the Common Agricultural Policy" (IMCAP) .

To achieve this, in addition to the aforementioned board game, “FunCAP” proposes to develop the following strategy to achieve its objective:

  1. Easier access to information on the CAP in the Euroregion

To this end, they will publish 12 articles in the press per country (Portugal and Spain) on the objectives of the CAP and the European Green Deal. Access to the website will also be streamlined.

  1. Detect and dismantle fake news

Design of 5 micro-videos that debunk misconceptions and misinformation about the objectives of the new CAP.

  1. Special attention to the youngest

To this end, "FunCAP" will introduce the board game to 400 students from 14 schools in the Euroregion.

  1. Participation of actors from different sectors of the population

Thus, two virtual seminars will be organized with experts speaking from different perspectives on the new CAP.

All these actions pursue the following objectives :

  • To increase the awareness of Euroregion citizens about the CAP and its contribution to environmental protection.
  • Contribute to dismantling misperceptions.
  • Working with young people and their teachers to bring them closer to the rural environment in a fun way.
  • Highlight the opportunities and challenges that the new CAP and the Farm to Fork and European Green Deal strategies offer to farmers and ranchers in the Euroregion.

In statements to RRN , Tania Gesto Casas, European project manager at the Juana de Vega Foundation , specifies that "the project ends in July 2022 with the digitalization of the card game, which will have already been tested by young people from seven schools in Portugal and seven in Galicia. The game will be uploaded to the project website, because the goal is for its methodology and objectives to be replicable in other Euroregions of the European Union."
