The EUROACE Euroregion , made up of Extremadura, Alentejo and the Central Region of Portugal, has launched the “ CROSSRURAL_HUB” project, a cross-border cooperation initiative aimed at improving rural employment, boosting innovation and helping to retain population in the territory.
Led by the General Directorate of Rural Development of the Junta de Extremadura , the project aims to create new job opportunities and improve living conditions in rural areas through technological innovation, the social economy and cooperation between territories.
A project to address the demographic challenge
The “CROSSRURAL_HUB” project was created with the aim of strengthening the appeal of rural areas in the EUROACE region and helping to address challenges such as depopulation, aging, and the loss of job opportunities. To this end, the project includes different lines of action focused on:
To promote the social and labor inclusion of the rural population.
Facilitating access to quality jobs through the modernization of strategic sectors.
Promote social, digital and technological innovation in the territory.
Promote cooperation and knowledge exchange between border regions.
The project will pay special attention to young people and women, recognizing their role as key agents in revitalizing rural areas and promoting generational renewal.
Training, innovation and networking
Among the planned actions are training initiatives, support and networking aimed at facilitating the adaptation of rural actors to new technologies and detecting the specific needs of each territory.
In addition, pilot programs related to social, digital and technological innovation will be launched, as well as new services and infrastructure aimed at attracting and retaining talent in the rural areas of the Euroregion.
Cross-border cooperation to revitalize the territory
The project consortium is made up of thirteen public and private entities from Spain and Portugal, including regional administrations, provincial councils, rural development entities, foundations and organizations specializing in innovation and social economy.
Through this alliance, CROSSRURAL_HUB aims to transform the border into a space of opportunity to share experiences, promote new initiatives, and strengthen territorial cohesion.
The initiative is co-financed by the Interreg VI-A Spain-Portugal Program (POCTEP) 2021-2027 , belonging to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) , and has a budget of more than 3.2 million euros and will be in operation until the end of 2028.
